What are headaches?

Most people get a headache at some point in life. This common condition involves pain in the head that ranges from a sharp, stabbing sensation to a dull, throbbing ache. Any type of headache can make it difficult to carry out daily tasks, but severe headaches can completely incapacitate you.

Tension headaches

The most common type of headache, tension headaches may feel like there’s a tight band encircling your head. Tension headaches may last from several minutes to days. 

Migraine headaches

Migraines are severe headaches that cause an intense throbbing sensation, usually on one side of your head. People with migraines may get them a few times a year, or as often as 15 or more times per month. These headaches usually involve other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and visual disturbances.

What causes headaches?

Tight muscles in your neck is a common cause of tension headaches. This type of headache often occurs with other symptoms, such as stiffness in the neck and shoulders. Neck pain and headaches are often due to a loss of cervical curve, which is the natural shape of the spine in your neck (cervical spine). 

How does chiropractic treat headaches?

First, Dr. Hancock reviews your medical history and asks you to describe your headache symptoms. He performs a thorough chiropractic evaluation, which may include a digital X-ray to assess the curvature of your spine.
